Log porch swings are very different than glider swings and typical porch swings. Gliders usually consist of a wooden frame and a cushion fabric device which fits over the lap of the benches, typically made of high-quality, woven lumber (such as cedar, cypress or teak). The front of the swing is rounded, such that the person seated beneath is very comfortable but still somewhat visible.

Log porch swings are different in that they are more closed in the back and sides, essentially eliminating the visibility of the seating area. This is probably desirable for many people.

In the Western United States, such a swing is a very popular product of rural living. During warmer weather one can enjoy the comfort and ambience created by a swing. The outdoors is an extension of the home, so a couple swings of different sizes or styles is the perfect way to create an extension of your indoor living area. Whether you call it an extension, an addition or a hybrid of the two will depend entirely on your desires and budget. It would also be important to consider the architectural style and size of the house; are there any tight or awkward spaces; how long the addition should be and the overall square footage of the house. It would also be important to take into consideration how the sun moves across the region you live in and over the year, and how much it moves across the face of the site.

Certain characteristics should be taken into consideration when building an addition. First, building an addition should always be done in proportion to the original house. Second, new rooms should be located as distant as possible from bedrooms. Third, a family room addition works great when winds or noise cause it to become less accommodating. Also, it is best for the windows to face up the original roof line rather than in the direction that the sunlight comes when you view the room from the side.

After the design and determining the measurements of the extension, it is time to start designing and creating the scaled drawings. To obtain these drawings, an architect or a company that specializes in extending homes through additions should be hired, preferably one that specializes specifically in building-extending projects. These companies and professionals can handle the legalities of obtaining permits to pull a permit. This will require obtaining the proper building permit, obtaining building-overs; and contracts to automate the construction process.
